Brown Recluse Spiders

The brown recluse spider, Loxosceles reclusa is found throughout the south-central and Midwestern United States. Infestations in Kentucky are more common as one travels westward; other species of spiders occur in the southwestern U.S., southern California, but the brown recluse is most notable and widespread outside its native range-occasionally a few may make it to nonnative areas during transport.

Although these spiders frequently live alongside humans without any trouble, when they do bite it can be serious. Besides being really painful, bites sometimes lead to secondary infections and disfiguring skin ulcers which cause pain and rarely result in life-threatening complications.

Brown Recluse Spider Control

Sign of Infestation

A house infestation can be hard to find because of the spider’s habits. The spiders hide in dark areas, which are nearly impossible to spot without professional help.

A thorough inspection is needed to reveal the location and extent of the infestation.

Likely hiding places include crevices, corners, and wall-floor junctures, especially behind clutter and stored items.

In infested garages, attics, basements, and crawl spaces, the spiders, egg sacs, and distinctive shed skins are often found along joists, sills, and rafters, as well as under rolled insulation. In living areas, they sometimes inhabit crevices behind and beneath beds and furniture, closets, clothing, shoes, and stored items. Brown recluse spiders also live above suspended ceilings, behind baseboards and woodwork, and within ducts and registers.

Even for professionals, infestations of the brown recluse can be difficult to control. Look for a reputable company like Ortex that is willing to take the time to work with you and your infestation. A combination of insecticide and sanitation measures is usually required to reduce or eliminate an entrenched Brown Recluse Infestation.
